Look up, there's a major statement being made in the skies above Dublin.
Over a thousand white balloons have been released in Ballyfermot today to highlight the problem of domestic violence.
Despite the wet and windy conditions, around 100 people turned out to watch the release of 1,000 white balloons in solidarity with women who’ve suffered domestic abuse.
It was organised by the Ballyfermot Network Challenging Violence Against Women, Co-chairperson is Mark Brennan: "There are 1,661 women in this area alone who have, or will, suffer domestic violence in one of it's many forms."
"These women are probably the strongest people you'll meet"
Debbie Brookes is a survivor of domestic abuse, she has this simple message for people out there: "Women who go through domestic abuse are not weak. They are probably the strongest people that you will ever meet. They put up with this abuse every day and sometimes for years, but they hold themselves together for themselves and for the families, when most of us would probably break. We just want to let these women know that there can be a light at the end of the tunnel."
She says while her experience was terrible, the relief she feels after getting away from her ex more than makes up for it: "I completely changed over those 12 years, I lost myself. I was living like a robot every day, but now I feel I've got myself back.".
