Thousands of bank customers have been left out of pocket after withdrawing money from Bank of Ireland ATMs.

Many customers who used the bank's machines on Tuesday were charged double what they withdrew.

The bank said the issue affected customers of other banks who used its facility.

It said the issue has since been resolved and it is now working to correct the bank balances.

In a statement, a Bank of Ireland spokesperson said: "A number of non-Bank of Ireland customers who made a cash withdrawal at Bank of Ireland ATMs on Tuesday 26th experienced a duplicate debit on their account."

"The issue that caused the error has been resolved.

"We are working to rectify the duplication for those impacted so that their account balances are corrected as soon as possible.

"We would like to apologise for the inconvenience."
