The Taoiseach says he is considering expanding the role of the public interest directors in Irish banks.

It comes after revelations about the lavish pension payments to ex-bankers.

The government says it cannot un-pick the contracts of former bankers who are collecting pensions of €500,000.

However the Taoiseach says he is considering expanding the role of the public interest directors on the banks to examine the issue.

Foregoing pensions

Meanwhile it is reported this evening that AIB has written to a number of former directors asking them to forego part of their pensions.

It is understood letters have been sent to Eugene Sheehy and Colm Doherty among others.

However AIB cannot compel them to give back some of their pension funds.
