Banksy’s latest artwork, ‘Mobile Lovers,’ has been claimed by a Bristol youth club who plan to auction it for thousands of pounds.
The work, which depicts a man and woman embracing while checking their mobile phones, was posted to Banksy’s official website yesterday with no location given.
It was discovered later in a Bristol city centre doorway, but by the afternoon it had been removed and taken to the nearby Riverside Youth Project. The piece, which is painted onto plywood, is available for public viewing there - though donations are requested.
Manager of the youth project Dennis Stinchcombe plans to auction the piece, with the money raised going towards keeping the youth project open. He says that £120,000 is needed and only a small amount has been raised so far. In an interview with BBC’s Jonathan Kay, he claimed: "I think Banksy's give it to us as a gift (sic)… It's left out there for somebody to do something with, and I think I'm doing something with it."
Although no claimants have come forward, the Bristol Post has reported that Mr. Stinchcombe has received death threats for removing the artwork.
