A barrister accused of murdering a man on his farm in Dublin has applied to the High Court for bail.

Diarmuid Phelan is accused of shooting Keith Conlon dead on lands at Hazelgrove Farm, Kiltalown Lane in Tallaght on February 22nd.

Outlining the State’s objections to bail, Detective Garda Mike McGrath said it would be alleged that after an encounter on his land, Diarmuid Phelan “deliberately shot” Keith Conlon’s dog with a legally held rifle.

He said Mr Conlon and two others were out hunting with the dog at the time.

He said it would be further alleged that following a “verbal altercation,” he fired a number of shots from a licenced revolver and claimed the final shot hit Mr Conlon in the back of the head after he had turned to run away.

The court heard Mr Phelan told gardaí he shot the dog after seeing it alone behind a bush on his land and that three men, who appeared to be hiding, then “exploded from the bush, roaring and shouting”.

He said he was terrified and repeatedly told them to stay away as he moved back.

When they continued to advance, he claimed he fired a shot into the air and was stunned when one of the men went down.

His bail hearing will resume tomorrow.
