Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of Barry Davis Ryan in Baltimore Co Cork.
The student (20) was recovered from the sea last Friday following a 10 day search which included volunteers from all over the country.
His father and his girlfriend also died in the tragedy.
Large crowds arrived at Rath Church over an hour before the mass was due to start.
Many of volunteers who took part in the search came to pay their respects to the CIT student, who was laid to rest beside his father in Tullagh Cemetery in Baltimore.
Leading the mourners was his mother Ann, his older brother Arthur and his youngest sister Charlotte - who raised the alarm when the three got into difficulty.
Niamh O'Connor was swept into the sea by a rogue wave as the group walked on rock near Beacon Point, and Barry Davis Ryan entered the water to save her.
However he got into difficulty and his father jumped in to save the pair - and he was also overcome by the sea.
The bodies of Ms O'Connor and Mr Ryan Senior were recovered from the water shortly after the alarm was raised.
A massive search for Mr Ryan Junior continued for 10 days until he was found last Friday.
The family have asked any donations be made to the West Cork Underwater Search and Rescue team.
