He is also nominated for an Academy Award for the same role.
Newstalk's Henry McKean visited Dublin's north-inner city, where people were beaming.
"Barry's one of our own, he went to the same school as myself," one man said.
"We're so proud of him, his family are so proud of him.
"He's a great inspiration to all the young people in the area.
"It just shows that just because you're from the inner-city, that doesn't hold you back.
"If you have the ambition, if you have the talent, it will come through," he added.

One woman said the actor is giving hope to a lot of people.
"Very proud of Barry; he's giving a whole new light to the area.
"He's giving hope to my young one that we'll all make it out of the place, and we'll all get somewhere in the end."
One boy, who is going to the same school that Barry attended, said he is inspiring.
"He was basically the same as us at his age when he started doing acting school," he said.
"It's just good to know that anyone can do whatever they want," he added.
