Meteorologist Joanna Donnelly has said it is 'getting ridiculous', after she had three bikes stolen in one year.

Her bike was stolen in May, her son's bike was robbed from Portmarnock station in August and her other son's bike was taken on Sunday at Howth Junction train station.

She took to Twitter to voice her frustration.

"Bastards, bastards, bastards; another bike stolen," she wrote.

Joanna told Lunchtime Live her son used the bike to get to school.

"Forty years cycling around Dublin, and since May I've lost three bikes: my bike and both my son's bikes" she said.

"It's getting ridiculous out there.

"It was how they got to school too, so now I'm looking at next Monday morning, how to get them to school and back."

She said her son was planning to take the bike on the train, but this wasn't possible.

"You can't take your bike on the train outside peak times, so his plan had been to take the bike on the train," she said.

"He's only 14, so he was a little stressed getting himself from Portmarnock all the way to Dalkey.

"He's on the national volleyball team for the under-16s, so he's delighted with himself.

"It was important that he get there; we couldn't get him there and making his own way there at 14 … but unfortunately when he came back to get his bike it was gone."

'You should be able to leave your bike'

Joanna said the bike was locked and secure - but that should not matter.

"Even if it's not, it's like saying to a woman 'What were you thinking walking through the park in the dark, didn't you know you were going to be attacked?'

"You should be able to leave your bike, whether it's locked or not locked, good lock or [not]."

Joanna added:"I hold out hope and I have Google Alerts set up that if a bike suiting my descriptions turns up, then I get a Google Alert.

"We're trying to encourage active travel, my kid gets himself around: he was getting himself to Dalkey, he gets himself in and out to school," she said.

'It's not a toy'

She said people should be conscious when buying a second-hand bike.

"I need proper facilities to be able to lock my bike, and I need a major deterrent to the people stealing and re-selling my bikes in order to fight climate change,” she said.

"They've stolen our means of transport now, it's not a toy.

"If you want to buy a second-hand bike off any of the websites... ask the seller questions about the bike and ask to see a photograph of the bike with the seller previous to them wanting to sell it.

"If you buy a stolen bike and it's recovered, you're the one that has possession of stolen property."
