The deadline to apply for a major aid scheme for beef farmers has been extended, with the Government saying up to 50,000 eligible farmers haven't applied yet.
The €100 million Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) was announced earlier this year to support the beef sector here.
It came amid concerns about the impact the ongoing Brexit process is having on the beef sector.
The European Commission agreed to €50 million in funding, with the Government here matching the figure.
Initially the deadline for applications was this coming Sunday, 8th September.
However, that's now been extended until midnight on 15th September.
In a statement, Agriculture Minister Michael Creed explained: “I am delighted to see that a large number of farmers have already applied online for this key support.
"Some 20,000 farmers have already submitted their applications but there are over 70,000 farmers who are potentially eligible for a payment and I have decided to extend the deadline to facilitate applications from as many of these as possible."
He added: "I also want to ensure that my Department is in a position to make payments to applicants at the earliest possible date and therefore I would urge eligible farmers to make their application by the new deadline."
Meanwhile, a series of supports have also been made available for those hoping to apply.
Farmers are being advised to apply on the Department's dedicated Agfood website, with a helpline available on 076-106-4424 for anyone who needs help in registering.
