You can see from the images below, entire towns have been wiped out, homes and buildings flattened, and coastlines decimated.

The before and after GIF animations were created by Digital Globe and Google Earth and show the total devastation the typhoon has had on the Philippines.

The confirmed number of casualties is at around 1,700 but that number is expected to rise, possibly to around 10,000.
