Over the years, so many artists have dipped into Prince's music that putting together a least of the best covers is nigh on impossible.
That didn't stop us from trying, so we've assembled this list of artists showing their love of the great man by trying to emulate him as best they can.
Jennifer Hudson and the Broadway cast of The Color Purple - "Purple Rain"
The most recent of the all of the covers here, following their on-stage performance, the cast were informed about Prince's death, and took part in an impromptu performance of "Purple Rain". The emotion behind J-Hud's voice is undeniable.
Patti Smith - "When Doves Cry"
Patti Smith is one of the few people in the world who can take a Prince song and make it sound like a Patti Smith song, not just Patti Smith covering a Prince song. Prince would be proud.
Alicia Keys - "How Come You Don't Call Me"
The original, slightly longer titled "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" was a non-album B-Side for Prince's "Kiss" back in the day, and Keys used it to follow up her hit single "Fallin'" to become a significant R'n'B presence in the States and around the world.
Foo Fighters - "Darling Nicki"
Jump forward to 05.04 in the video above to hear the famous rockers cover Prince's ode to a very sexually liberated young lady. Prince returned the favour by covering "Best Of You" during his Superbowl performance, which got drummer Taylor Hawkins thinking: "Dude, I have no idea why he did it, but I’d love to find out. I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of "F— you" to us, or maybe he really likes the song. Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs — and actually doing it better than we did."
Tom Jones - "Kiss"
Teaming up with British electropop group Art of Noise, Tom Jones placed his cheeky-chappy persona front and centre for this cover of Prince's far-more sexually forward original.
Beyonce - "The Beautiful Ones"
I think we can all agree that if there is anyone in the world we're okay with covering a Prince song, it's Beyonce. Mariah Carey also covered the track, and actually gave it a pretty decent go around, too.
D'Angelo - "She's Always In My Hair"
The purest vision of Prince's influence on an artist, D'Angelo recorded this cover for - of all things - the soundtrack to horror movie Scream 2.
TLC - "If I Was Your Girlfriend"
For their massively successful 1994 album Crazysexycool, the ladies T-Boz, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez and Chilli covered the gender-flipping fantasy love song, by flipping the genders yet again. Or not, it's not clear. Either way, it totally worked.
