Only four of the seventy pieces that were up for auction failed to sell. Christie’s easily surpassed their own €310 million (or $400 million) estimate, with a majority of offerings surpassing their individual estimates.
The top three sales were Jackson Pollock’s Number 19, 1948 (approximately €45 million), Roy Lichtenstein's Woman with Flowered Hat (€43.5 million) and Jean-Michel Basquiat's Dustheads (€38 million).
The latest record-breaking auction comes just days after rival auction house Sotheby's sale of Domplatz, Mainland by Gerhard Richter became the highest ever auction sale for a work by a living artist for almost €29 million.
