“Bitterly cold” temperatures are due again tonight, Met Éireann has warned.
Overnight, temperatures dropped as low as -8°C around Mountdillon in County Roscommon and readings below -5°C were typical across the nation.
An Orange weather warning will come into effect this evening for all counties in the Republic - except for Donegal.
“Another bitterly cold night on the way tonight with severe frost, ice and some patches of fog,” Michelle Dillon from Met Éireann told Newstalk Breakfast.
“Temperatures rise a little bit into Saturday but we’ll see the more significant rise in temperatures then through Saturday night and Sunday.
“That’s as the weather system pushes up from the southwest, bringing with it a mix of sleet and rain - possibly snow for higher ground.”
It is still too early to tell whether some parts of Ireland will have a white Christmas.
“It is looking likely we will see a few more cold days before we head into Christmas Eve,” Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather told Newstalk.
“But that is just a little bit beyond the reliable timeframe at the moment.”
