The final scene in Blackadder Goes Forth is that most unique of things; a genuinely moving piece of television that put an end to a series in a way that made sense. It closed a chapter in a deeply satisfying way that showed just how powerful a good script can be.

However, if Tony Robinson is to be believed, there have been promising talks among the cast and crew of Blackadder that could see the show return for a fifth series, something that fans are understandably both excited and nervous about.

Given that August 24th is also Stephen Fry's birthday, we've decided to take a look back at the elements of his performance that made him such a vital part of the show, and which help to explain why we would be intrigued by the possibility of the classic comedy making a return.

His talent for physical comedy

Hugh Laurie was probably bruised after a few shoots, but that made it all the funnier.

A way with words

Even when some of them weren't actual words...

Getting into the skin of a character

He often played a rather unlikable selection of characters, but his presence and comic timing were enough to make it possible to laugh at the people he played.

Making toilet humour seem high brow

Pooh poohing has never been so funny.

His familiartiy with the role

He has shown in the past an abiltiy to slip into character at a moment's notice.
