The Army Bomb Disposal Team has rendered safe a historic, viable grenade in The Phoenix Park in Dublin this afternoon.

The team were deployed by the Defence Forces after the suspect object was found in the grass by members of the public.

The area was cordoned off and the team arrived on scene at around 3.30.

The Mills-type grenade was safely removed to an open area where a controlled explosion was carried out.

The scene was declared safe at 4.10 pm.

The Defence Forces say the grenade type in question was early twentieth century in origin. It was utilised during the War of Independence, the Civil War and the two World Wars.
