Bord Gáis Energy is to increase its residential electricity prices by almost 5%.

It says the 4.8% rise will add 99 cent per week to the average electricity bill.

The group says the hike is driven by the increase in transmission and distribution charges as well as the jump in the wholesale cost of gas.

Dave Kirwan is Managing-Director of Bord Gáis Energy.

“Bord Gáis Energy regrets having to introduce this price increase which is due to factors beyond our control, such as a weakening Euro and increasing international wholesale prices and networks charges” he said.

“In the current climate, we know that many families are struggling to make ends meet, and we have therefore worked hard to minimize the overall level of the increase” he added.

It announced just under a fortnight ago that it is also to raise gas prices by 8.5%.

The changes will take effect from the middle of next month.

It follows a similar move by Electric Ireland which recently announced an increase in its tariffs.

The energy firm announced a price hike of almost 6% from October 1st for its domestic electricity customers.
