A single bottle of whisky has been sold at auction for more than €1.7 million.

Sotheby's - which oversaw the bidding in London - hasn't revealed the buyer but described it as the "holy grail".

The Macallan Fine & Rare 60-Year-Old 1926 set a new record for any bottle of wine or spirit sold at auction.

It was part of an auction sale dubbed the 'ultimate whiskey collection', which raised around €8.8 million in total from sales of hundreds of bottles from an 'American connoisseur's' collection.

The record-breaking bottle was part of 178 bottles from Scottish distillery The Macallan, in a collection spanning seven decades from 1926 through to 1991.

The bottles in question sold for a combined total of €5.9 million.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s spirits specialist, added: “It was remarkable to see so many iconic bottles break records – homage to the importance of distilleries such as Bowmore, Brora, Springbank and, of course, The Macallan.

"There were cheers when the hammer fell on the Macallan Fine and Rare 1926, in one has to be one of the most exciting moments in the history of whisky sales."

The Macallan distillery is based in Moray in Scotland, and has been operating since 1824.
