A 7-year-old child from Cork has been airlifted to the Children's Hospital in Dublin in a critical condition, after he fell into a river.

The boy was rescued from the flooded river in Midleton in Co Cork yesterday evening.

It is understood the 7-year-old boy was playing football with friends in the Tir Cluain estate in Midleton, when he slipped and fell into the Owen-curra River around a quarter to 7pm yesterday evening.

His friends raised the alarm, after he was quickly swept downstream because the river was in flood.

It is believed a local man managed to rescue the boy from the river, and emergency services tried to resuscitate him.

He was then rushed to Cork University Hospital before later being transferred to Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Dublin - where he remains in a critical condition.
