A man has been arrested after a hit-and-run incident left a young Cork boy in a critical condition.

The boy (7) was playing in Ballymacoda village near Youghal at lunchtime, when he was struck by a car which failed to stop.

The boy was rushed to Cork University Hospital where his condition is described as critical.

Accident investigators are appealing for witnesses.
