Veteran art critic and broadcaster Brian Sewell has died at the age of 84, his agent has said.

Mr Sewell, who was diagnosed with cancer last year, died at his London home on Saturday morning, his agent Francine Fletcher said.

A controversial figure with a sharp tongue, Mr Sewell was particularly known for his criticism of modern art and the Turner Prize.

Among the targets of his criticism were Tracey Emin, whose work he described as "trivial", and Damien Hirst.

He drew accusations of being sexist when he said that "there has never been a first-rank woman artist."

Born in 1931 and raised in London, Mr Sewell turned down a place at Oxford University to study at the Courtauld Institute of Art.

It was there that he met and became friends with Anthony Blunt, the art historian who was later revealed as the "Fourth Man" in the Cambridge spy ring of Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean.

Before becoming an art critic, Mr Sewell worked at Christie's and then as an art dealer. In the 1990s, he became a household name thanks to frequent TV appearances.

The Evening Standard said Mr Sewell had worked at the paper from 1984 until June this year.
