3 British men who claim they were tortured in police custody in Dubai have been jailed for 4 years for drug possession.

Karl Williams, Suneet Jeerh and Grant Cameron were arrested in the Gulf state last summer. It came after officers found a type of cannabis in their car.

Mr. Cameron's mother Tracey is confident her son and his friends will be out in a matter of months.

"Although he's been given a rather harsh sentence by our standards, he can receive a pardon" she said.

"The next lot of pardons happens in July - and I am confident that all 3 boys will be pardoned in July, and they'll be home with their families soon". "I sincerely hope that the two men do discuss these 3 young men's cases, and the UAE President does have the power to grant a pardon".

"We are hoping that that will be what happens" she added.

The 3 Londoners, aged 25 and 26, were arrested last July after police said they had found a synthetic form of cannabis - known as 'spice' - in their car.

The next opportunity to put some pressure on Dubai comes tomorrow when British Prime Minister David Cameron meets the president of the United Arab Emirates.

In the meantime the men are expected to appeal their sentences.
