The Government has published a plan aimed at protecting State infrastructure and services - such as schools, hospitals and energy grids - from cyber attacks.
Communications Richard Bruton says the new strategy has been designed to ensure authorities can respond to and manage cyber security incidents such as hacking or identity theft.
As part of the plan, the Government is planning to further develop the National Cyber Security Centre.
Among more than a dozen other measures due to be in effect by 2024, a 'baseline security standard' will be applied to all Government departments and major agencies.
Authorities will put together an "updated detailed risk assessment of the current vulnerability" of critical infrastructure and services.
Minister Bruton explained: "Eternal vigilance is the issue here.
"We need to make sure we are embodying and embedding best practice as we evolve.
“We must ensure our critical national services – our hospitals, schools, enterprises, energy networks and security systems are protected from malicious online forces and are well placed to respond to threats."
The Government says they'll also work to "deepen" Ireland's efforts with international agencies focused on internet security.
