It has been a week wherein the Táiniste has blasted so-called austerity hawks and the President of the country railed against decisions that favoured wealth over fairness.
With exactly one month to the October 15th budget, the question of austerity and the scale of the fiscal adjustments required is front and centre of debate both inside and outside the halls of power.
So should we press ahead with austerity in the budget?
Today on the Sunday Show, Shane Coleman was joined by journalist and lecturer Angela Long; Constantin Gurdgiev, Adjunct Economics lecturer in Trinity College Dublin, and Dan O’Brien, Economics Editor with the Irish Times to discuss this issue.
The panel spoke about how to meet adjustment targets- possibly through increased taxation or departmental budget cuts- and whether there is an alternative to austerity.
