Budget 2025 will include funding for the recruitment of up to 1,000 new Gardaí and extra prison spaces, Newstalk understands.

The Department of Justice investment will be targeted at tackling domestic, sexual and gender-based violence, expanding prison capacity and speeding up the courts system.

A "ramping up" of the immigration system also looks set to go ahead so international protection cases can be processed more quickly.

The Garda training allowance will also increase to €354.

Prisons

Government sources say additional prison capacity is a big priority for Justice Minister Helen McEntee.

The package includes funding to open 1,100 additional prison spaces within the existing prison system in the next five years.

A review is also underway regarding the possibility of using Thornton Hall in County Dublin as a location for another new prison.

This would represent the largest ever expansion of prisons in Ireland.

Budget 2025 will also include hundreds of additional staff being recruited for prisons – with funding to be set aside for 200 additional prison officers this year and 150 next year.

Violence and abuse services

Meanwhile, Budget 2025 will bring spending on domestic, sexual and gender-based violence to nearly €70m.

The funding is more than treble the funding that existed for services when Minister McEntee first became Minister for Justice, and a further significant increase on last year.

Sources say it will ensure Ireland is on track to double the number of refuge spaces as part of the Zero Tolerance strategy.

Criminal legal aid fees are also understood to be increasing by 8% from January 2025.

Budget 2025 is also set to include the rollout of free Hormone Replacement Therapy and an expansion of the publicly funded IVF scheme.
