With Budget 25 now over and done with, the focus now turns to impact of the announced measures – and when they might be rolled out.
With an overall package of €8.3 billion in spending and taxation measures, there is a lot to wade through, from childcare subsidies to cost-of-living payments and USC cuts.
Many of the measures will be rolled out gradually or may not come into force well into next year – but there are some that will land almost immediately.
First off, there is yet another hike in the price of a pack of cigarettes.
The €1 increase on the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes will push the price above €18 for the first time – with a pro-rate increase on all other tobacco products.
The Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco has labelled the increase “brutal and counterproductive,” however, Irish Heart has welcomed the measure as a vital deterrent.
The rise will apply from midnight tonight.
The changes to inheritance tax bands are also set to apply from midnight tonight.
The changes will allow a parent to leave a child €400,000 in inheritance tax-free – up from the previous limit of €335,000.
Meanwhile, the Group B band is changing from €32,500 to €40,000 and Group C is changing from €16,250 to €20,000.
The new 6% stamp duty on homes sold for more than €1.5 million will also apply from tonight as will the extension of the reduced rate of VAT on petrol and diesel.
