The Cabinet has approved proposals which will see calories being printed on menus.
The law will require restaurants, takeaways and all food service outlets to post the information alongside the price for all items offered on their menus.
The move has been approved amid concerns about high levels of obesity.
However restaurant owners say it is a bad idea and will add to their cost base.

Paul Treyvaud, owner of Treyvaud’s Restaurant in Killarney, and Dr Ciara Kelly - of Operation Transformation and the Friday Right Hook - appeared on Newstalk Lunchtime this afternoon to discuss the legislation.
Dr Kelly started by saying she welcomes the display of calorie counters, while Mr Treyvaud contested "calories on menus is lazy politics". A lively debate on the subject followed. You can listen back below:
