The Cabinet sub-committee on COVID-19 will meet tomorrow.
The three party leaders along with the Health, Finance and Public Expenditure ministers will attend.
Senior health officials will also be in attendance.
The meeting will take place as pressure on the health system increases amid rising coronavirus case numbers, and growing calls for the government to make a decision on schools reopening on Monday.
Opposition parties are meeting with the Education Minister this afternoon to discuss the reopening of schools.
The Department of Education says it fully intends for schools to re-open on January 11th - but a number of opposition parties have called for that to be delayed by at least a week.
The HSE chief executive Paul Reid this morning said the daily number of COVID-19 cases is likely to hit 7,000 in the coming days.
Figures show the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals has risen rapidly to 744 this morning, with 70 in intensive care.
Plans are now underway for public hospitals to significantly cut back on non-urgent care in order to make more capacity available.
