A station on the proposed new MetroLink line could be named after a famous Dublin pub.
The Brian Boru pub in Glasnevin is facing demolition to make way for Dublin's new underground line and its owners have suggested naming a station after it to preserve its legacy.
The pub has been run by the Hedigan family for the last 120 years and they made the suggestion at an oral hearing into the project yesterday.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TFI) and the National Transport Authority (NTA) have said the demolition of the 200-year-old pub is “regrettable, but necessary”.
The pub was referenced in Ulysses and is believed to have been built on the site where Brian Boru camped before the Battle of Clontarf.
The family has suggested naming the Glasnevin metro station the Brian Boru Station instead.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland has said it is willing to consider the proposal.
