Calls are being made for a knife amnesty to be established after a man was critically injured following a stabbing incident in Co. Louth. 

The man, who is in his 40s, was set upon by a gang of youths on Patrick Street in Dundalk and stabbed in the face, neck and arm. 

He was rushed to hospital where he is now in a critical condition. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the attack to come forward.

Local Councillor Mark Dearey said the establishment of a knife amnesty in the town may help prevent similar attacks from happening again.
