Calls to Console's free suicide helpline rose by almost a third over the recent Christmas period.

The national suicide prevention and bereavement charity received an average of 165 calls per day over the holiday period.

That's an increase of 31 per cent on the equivalent ten-day period last year.

Almost 4,000 people rang the helpline in December.
