The Environment Minister is expected to sign new building regulations which will see carbon monoxide alarms become mandatory in Irish homes.

The move is in an effort to prevent deaths from the poisonous gas known as the 'silent killer'.

The changes will mean householders will be required to ensure alarms are fitted when new or replacement boilers, fires, heaters and stoves are installed.

Building firms will also be required to make sure the alarms are fitted in new houses.
