Cardinal Keith O'Brien has apologised for his behaviour.

The 74-year-old resigned as Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh in the UK last week over allegations of inappropriate behaviour up to 30 years ago.

He admitted that there have been times when his sexual conduct "fell beneath expected standards".

In a statement issued this evening he said sorry to all those he offended and has asked for forgiveness.
