Protesters have gathered outside the Lord Bagenal Hotel in Carlow where the Tánaiste is attending an event.

Around 20 people are protesting the jailing of water protesters during the week for breaching court orders.

Carlow Councillor Willie Quinn was the only Labour candidate in the running for the upcoming Carlow-Kilkenny by-election, and has been officially selected as the candidate at this evening's selection convention.

Tánaiste Joan Burton has been attending the event at the hotel in Leighlinbridge.

The by-election will be held on May 22nd alongside the same-sex marriage referendum, and the vote on a proposal to lower the age for contesting the Presidency from 35 to 21.

Fianna Fáil has already chosen Bobby Aylward as its candidate to contest the by-election, which was caused by Phil Hogan's appointment as European Commissioner.

They will join the race with Green councillor Malcolm Noonan, Sinn Féin councillor Kathleen Funchion, Independent councillor Breda Gardner, the Anti-Austerity Alliance's Conor MacLiam and the People Before Profit candidate, Adrienne Wallace.
