People who drive along Dublin’s Westland Row can no longer turn left onto Pearse Street.

Public transport, taxis and cyclists are unaffected by the change.

Car drivers will still be able to turn right and drive east towards Ringsend.

The move is part of Phase 2 of the Dublin City Transport Plan and follows on from Phase 1, which saw restrictions along the quays introduced in August last year

On The Pat Kenny Show, motoring expert Ger Herbert said the change is unlikely to be as disruptive as Phase 1.

“It’s been introduced at a time when the traffic is going to be lighter,” she said.

“The secondary schools are closing at the end of this week and that will have a big impact on traffic.

“Ideally, if they’d left it another month, it would have been an awful lot better - but it’s a good time to be introducing it.”

Ms Herbert continued the idea behind the change is to encourage people to make greater use of public transport and cut carbon emissions.

“The whole point of this is that 60% of the general traffic is only going through the city, it’s not actually stopping,” she said.
