An employee at a meat plant in Co Tipperary has tested positive for COVID-19, it has been confirmed.

ABP said it was notified on Friday that a staff member at the Cahir plant tested positive after "being referred for testing as a result of the company's factory entrance employee assessment procedures".

All close contacts of the worker are now said to be self-isolating and undergoing testing.

In a statement, the company said a range of COVID-19 protection measures have been in place since March.

They include temperature checks at the factory entrance, staggered start and end times, and "COVID-19 marshals to help everyone to manage and understand the new processes".

It comes after a mushroom plant in Golden in Co Tipperary last week suspended operations after a number of workers tested positive for the virus.

Local TD Mattie McGrath says the recent cases are a concern, but he hopes health officials will be able to manage any clusters locally.

He said: "The mushroom plant has dealt with this pretty swiftly, and I hope this [case] was detected early on and people are isolating.

"Hopefully it will be able to be contained, and it won't lead to too much more spread."
