The young boy and his grandparents who died in a crash is Cashel are more than a number added to the list of road victims, a priest has said at their funeral.
Thomas O’Reilly (45), Bridget O’Reilly (46) and their three-year-old grandson Tom were laid to rest today at a funeral in Saint John the Baptist Church, Co Tipperary.
President Michael D Higgins attended the funeral to pay respects.
Father Enda Brady said the trio unfortunately joined the number of road death victims, which has seen a sharp spike this year.
“But we don’t gather here today to remember them as a number,” he said.
“Tom and Bridget’s children remember the parents who loved and cared for them and their nephew.
“Their parents, brothers and sisters, cousins and extended family remember the people that were Tom and Bridget O’Reilly.
“They remember young Tom, the character that will be remembered throughout Ireland with his thumb raised in the air.
“The way they laughed and cried, the way they interacted, the way they were – these are the traits and qualities that we remember today.”
The mass concluded with the song ‘Supermarket Flowers’ by Ed Sheeran, performed by members of the local community.
Thomas, Bridget and Tom were buried in St Cormac’s Cemetry following the funeral.
The grandparents and child died after the car they were travelling in hit a wall in Windmill Knockbulloge on August 29th.
Two others in the car, Thomas and Diane O'Reilly, both aged 22, were sent to hospital for serious injuries.
Hundreds attended a vigil held for Thomas, Bridget and Tom on Thursday, August 31st.
