Bad news for Star Trek fans all over the world, as news of a five-month delay over the launch of the new live-action TV series has just been announced. Star Trek: Discovery, which was scheduled to start in January on CBS, and to be beamed around the world on Netflix, in January has now been pushed back to May.
“Bringing Star Trek back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood,” said executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller in a joint statement.
“We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.”
While casting details have yet to be released on the hotly anticipated new show, we do know that it will consist of 13 episodes and tell a grand story across a series arc, unlike the original show which was episodic in nature. Discovery will also be the first iteration of Star Trek in which the lead character is not the ship’s captain, rather a female Star Fleet officer, and it will be set a decade before Captain Kirk and the rest of the Enterprise crew took up their five-year mission to boldly go around the universe.
CBS has always intended to air Star Trek: Discovery on its new online service, CBS All Access. The streaming site will also be the home to a new spin-off show inspired by the legal drama The Good Wife. The as-yet unnamed show will debut in February, with husband-and-wife team Robert and Michelle King returning as showrunners.
The new legal drama will feature The Good Wife’s Christine Baranski, who will reprise her role as attorney Diane Lockhart, and British actress Cush Jumbo, who appeared in the show’s final season as Lucca Quinn, will also star.
