The Central Bank is readying a €8.5m revamp of its currency centre in south-Dublin which will modernise its security infrastructure.

The building is listed as the second highest security complex in Ireland - it has a constant army and garda presence.

It was build in the 1970s to print and hold punts, the Central Bank says that it will be upgraded to bring security provisions in line with the "current best practice for installations of this kind."

The project will include the construction of a new security control room and new outbuildings. There will also be a new two storey reception and a office as well as a checkpoint building containing search rooms, x ray machines, and meeting rooms. The structure of some existing facilities will be reinforced according to The Irish Independent.

Its video analytics and monitoring systems will also be improved.

"The development is part of the Central Bank's regular and ongoing programme of maintaining its buildings and infrastructure," the bank commented.

It is looking for an architect-led design team to revamp the facility. Given the nature of the project, those involved will be subject to garda vetting. The original currency center was designed by architect Sam Stephenson.
