Alone, the charity that provides services to older people, is highlighting the link between emigration and loneliness this St Patrick's Day.

The charity says the national holiday can be a lonely time for older people, as children and relatives may have emigrated from the country.

Alone says that the damaging effects of loneliness can be as harmful as the effects of obesity or smoking.
