The government is being warned that there is a real risk to people's lives through fuel poverty. Experts from Europe and north America are gathering in Dublin today to discuss and influence European policy on fuel poverty.
Organisers say it has become a priority because of the recession, unemployment and the introduction of carbon taxes across Europe.
Since the beginning of recession fuel prices have risen dramatically and dependence on fuel allowances has jumped by 15 to 25%.
Charity Energy Action says the conference will be an invaluable opportunity to:
- explore ways to embed energy poverty within the broader rubric of EU legislation and remedial action
- tackle fuel poverty which is now an EU priority, as a result of recession, fuel prices and carbon tax. (Regressive tax)
- network with your peers and contribute to the general debate on European Energy Poverty
- raise the profile of fuel poverty
It is estimated that 65 million Europeans live in fuel poverty which is associated with more than 30,000 excess winter deaths in Europe per year.
The Energy Action European Fuel Poverty conference runs today and tomorrow in the capital. Among the speakers at the event is the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbite.
Charlie Roarty is from Energy Action. He explains the dangers and says the issue has to be addressed.
