Children’s charity Childline received 1,097 calls over Christmas.
Calls made during the three days from December 23rd to 25th were up 20% on the same period last year.
Childline is Ireland’s only listening service that is open 24 hours a day, all year long.
Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) Chief Executive John Church said Christmas time is no exception from the cruelties of life.
“For too many children and young people, Christmas is sadly just another day,” he said.
“For some, the issues they encounter all year can worsen. It can mean abuse, neglect, and loneliness.
“For others, Christmas can present new worries and concerns.
“Whatever the reason, they turn to Childline for support and for someone to listen.”
Volunteers
Mr Church thanked ISPCC volunteers for running the service.
“We are so thankful to all our volunteers who gave their time and continue to do so across the festive period,” he said.
“They leave their own families at Christmas to ensure there is always someone on the other end of the line when a child or young person needs them.”

Early data has revealed that Stephen’s Day will be one of the busiest days of the year for the staff and volunteers at Childline.
It is expected over 400 children will reach out to the service today over something that has happened to them over Christmas.
