The children of Irishman Khalid el-Astal have crossed the border from Gaza into Egypt this morning.
Khalid told Newstalk that four-year-old Ali and one-year-old Sara made it through the Rafah Crossing today after administrative delays caused problems for them yesterday
They are now with their uncle who will bring them to Ireland.
The children were injured during airstrikes in Khan Younis a number of weeks ago.
Khalid’s wife, Ashwak Jendia, died from severe injuries she sustained during the strike.
The children were originally due to cross the border into Egypt yesterday but were delayed due to administrative issues.
Khalid was born in Belfast and currently lives in Kildare.
Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast before getting the news that his children had crossed the border, he said he had all lost contact with them due to an internet blackout.
He said he hoped to see his children again by Ali’s birthday on November 22nd.
Khalid also said he will keep the memory of his wife alive for their children.
"All the time, [I’m] telling everyone how beautiful she was, how talented she was, how brave she was,” he said.
“As a daughter and as a mum, she was amazing. She was amazing.”
Some 23 Irish citizens left Gaza on Wednesday, and more are expected to cross the border into Egypt in the coming days.
