Irish children are joining others around the world in celebrating the joy of reading on World Book Day.

The celebration is all about getting more books into the hands of more children and young people than ever before.

A range of new books have been unveiled to mark the occasion.

The books, available for €1.50 each, include titles International bestsellers Anthony Horowitz and Matt Haig, multi-award winner Onjali Q. Raúf and Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey.

There is also one book exclusively available in Ireland – Where Are You Puffling? written by Erika McGann and illustrated by Gerry Daly.

These children from St Brigid' Primary School in Dublin say they enjoy reading books with funny characters.

The celebrations also include the Share a Story campaign, urging parents, families and carers to find ten minutes every day to Share a Story with children in their care.

Organisers said sharing stories together for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting positive effects on a child’s future and creates readers for life.

World Book Day 2020 aims to take the idea one step further by encouraging families to record their storytime and share over a million stories online throughout World Book Day month.
