China’s very first 3D-printed car was unveiled yesterday in Hainan Province. We’re informed that it was built by a 3D printing company called Sanya Sihai. The car weighs in at 500kg and was printed in the space of five days. The electric vehicle was printed in “Tyrant Gold” filament – which gives it its very orange look. This machine said to have cost in and around €1,620 to build – including electricity and labour.
Reports say that the car can seat two and reach a maximum speed of 40 km/h. It is 3.6 metres long and 1.63 metres wide.
As to who created the first 3D-printed car is currently up for debate. In 2010 a hybrid vehicle called Urbee was built with the panels and exterior parts being printed. In 2013 a company called “Local Motors” revealed their 3D car, Strati – they claim they have the first 3D car as everything except for the parts that were “mechanically involved” was printed.
