Gardai are pledging to clamp down on irresponsible and risky behaviour on the roads over the coming weeks.

The annual Christmas and New Year road safety campaign is being launched today by the Gardai and the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

154 people have died on the roads so far this year which is a reduction of 15 on the same period last year.

The force is also warning drivers of weather conditions that may be dangerous this week with Met Eireann indicating there is a threat of snow in Northern and Eastern counties midweek.

Is your journey necessary?

The gardai say that in extreme weather conditions you should ask yourself if making a journey by road is absolutely necessary.

They say that delaying your trip until the weather and road conditions improve or using public transport should be considered.

And they are reminding people that if your journey is unavoidable you should be prepared by ensuring your vehicle has a more than adequate supply of fuel for the journey.

They are reminding us to allow extra time and drive with caution and to let someone know your route and when you expect to arrive.

They say the best road conditions are likely to occur between 10am and 4pm.

The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan says his officers will be mounting a high visibility campaign over the festive period.
