US voters are getting 'bored' of Donald Trump and his “semi-ludicrous” swipes at Kamala Harris, Ciara Kelly has claimed.
The Newstalk Breakfast host was speaking after the Democratic National Convention got underway in Chicago on Monday.
US President Joe Biden abandoned his bid to remain as president a month ago after a series of gaffes and a disastrous debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump, with Kamala Harris then stepping in as candidate.
Ciara said the race has been completely changed in the weeks since.
"We thought we had one US presidential election coming up,” she said. “We thought we had Trump versus Biden.”
"Biden was looking frail, unsure of his footing; Biden was looking frankly very old and possibly unfit.
"Now we have a very different election campaign on our hands [with] a much younger, more energetic candidate against Trump.
"A lot of what the Democrats say appears to be landing – the felon versus the prosecutor, [the idea that] Trump is 'anti-democracy' after all the stuff that happened on January 6th."
Ciara said Trump’s attempts to label Kamala Harris a communist or question her race are not landing with voters.
"These kind of semi-ludicrous swipes at her - are we bored of Trumpisms?" she asked.
'It seems unhinged'
Presenter Jonathan Healy also questioned what the future holds for Trump.
"I wonder is the one-trick pony finished up with his trick?" he said.
"If you look at the Republican convention, which took place a couple of days after somebody tried to shoot him, it seems unhinged by comparison to what is happening at the Democratic National Convention.
"Nobody's going around with plasters on their ears; nobody brought a dog on stage yet.
"What has the Republicans very concerned is [that] Kamala Harris is leading Trump in five of the seven battleground states.
"If she stays there, there is no road for Donald Trump to get to the White House.
"That is going to freak him out and cause him much more anxiety than anything else Joe Biden might have been able to do to him in the campaign".
Jonathan said Donald Trump himself seems incapable of changing his approach.
"He has only one way of doing things which is to go after the individual and be nasty - that's not working right now," he said.
"They're desperately trying to get him to talk about the economy and things that will appeal to those red voters.
"He just cannot resist because he has to make it about himself".
Jonathan added that he believes Trump will have "a massive wobble" between now and November.
