The Irish Film and Television Awards took place last night - with Cillian Murphy, Saoirse Ronan, Bad Sisters, Say Nothing and Small Things Like These amongst the big winners.

Cillian Murphy took home the Best Lead Actor - Film accolade for Small Things Like These, which also took home the biggest award of the night 'Best Film'.

The adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novel also picked up Best Screenplay for Enda Walsh.

The Cork actor Mr Muphy said there was a "great responsibility" in making this film.

"So many people read the book, it's on the curriculum, my son's doing the Leaving, so I think it's amazing that the book has been taken to heart so much in the country," he said.

"Then we just felt a great responsibility to be faithful to the book.

“There's people walking around who have this as a real lived experience and it's affected so many people across the country, so we felt a great deal of responsibility."

Saoirse Ronan took home two gongs – Best Lead Actress - Film for The Outrun and Best Supporting Actress - Film for Blitz.

Bad Sisters also swept up a few major awards but none of the acting categories.

The highly lauded Kneecap film picked up four awards out of a total of 17 nominations – Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Casting.

Colin Farrell has been named Best Lead Actor in a drama for The Penguin – a series that saw Farrell completely transformed with special effects makeup.

The Best Actress – Drama gong went to Lola Petticrew for Say Nothing, which also saw wins for Best Supporting Actor – Drama (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) and Best Supporting Actress – Drama (Hazel Doupe).

The IFTAs also saw Colm Meaney take home the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Anthony Boyle claimed the IFTA Rising Award.
