Citizens Information Service workers will ballot today on strike action.

Advocates of strike action are unhappy with the failure of their employers and the Department of Social Protection to give staff a pay hike.

SIPTU Deputy General Secretary John King said a Labour Court recommendation for a wage rise has not been honoured.

“The Labour Case heard the case in June of 2024 and the Labour Court recommended that the employers honour the agreement that they concluded in May of 2023,” he said.

“However, since June of this year, we still have received no indication [and] we’ve made no progress on the funder or the employer agreeing to implement this pay award.”

SIPTU said the action could lead to the closure of dozens of Citizens information Centres around the country.

“The action will take place of a complete withdrawal of labour,” Mr King said.

“It will be a strike and the ballot will be counted on Monday morning - it concludes today at  5pm.

“Following the counting of the ballot, the Committee will meet to determine when they will serve notice on the employer to commence the strike action.”

Citizens Information Service workers are obliged to provide "free, impartial information" to those in need.
