Dog owners who do not clean up after their pets might just be embarrassed into doing it as a new system is installed in Co. Clare.

Beaches in Lahinch and Kilkee have been fitted with high-tech tannoys which will advise beachgoers to clean up.

The system is motion activated with warning messages played out every time a member of the public - or a dog - comes close to the sensor.

They will be switched off at night so as not to annoy those living nearby.

Clare is the latest county to use such a system, after Limerick City and County Council devised a similar system back in March.

Their mobile and programmable audio systems were installed on either side of the River Shannon in Limerick city.

Dog owners who pass those speakers along the city boardwalk will trigger a message stating "'Do your bit to keep Limerick clean. Stop Limerick Dog Litter. Use Any bag any bin - please pick up after your dog".

The Council relocates them to other areas throughout Limerick and is also considering installing additional speakers elsewhere.
