Tributes are being paid to Clodagh Phelan who died after falling from a hotel balcony on the Spanish island of Majorca.
It happened early yesterday morning in the town of Alcudia while her family were sleeping.
Spanish police received an emergency call after another person staying at the hotel found her body.
Taoiseach Simon Harris expressed his sympathy to Clodagh’s family following her tragic death.
“So sad to hear of the tragic loss of Clodagh Phelan,” he wrote on X (Twitter).
“So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident.
“Thoughts with her family and community at this truly awful time.”
'A rare talent'
Parnell Athletics Club in County Wicklow, where Clodagh was a member, said they were “truly heartbroken” to hear of her passing.
Rathdrum Rugby Club said they were "stunned by the tragic passing of our little star Clodagh Phelan".
"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to her parents Valerie, Liam, brothers Will and David, the extended Phelan and Hobson families and all her friends in the many teams that she graced in our community.
"Clodagh was truly a class apart with an outstanding future ahead of her.
"A rare talent with a combination of pure athletic capability, skill, sense of team, and as anyone who ever had the privilege to see her play will know well, a singular will to win the battle," they said.
"Clodagh’s legacy and impact in her short life will remain with Rathdrum RFC forever."
'Taken way too soon'
Avondale GAA said Clodagh was "full of the joys of life".
"No words can describe the utter heartbreak that our club and the Rathdrum area are feeling following the awful news of the passing of Clodagh Phelan yesterday morning," the club said.
"A beautiful young girl who was full of the joys of life, a girl who excelled on the sporting fields of Camogie, football, athletics and rugby has been taken from us way too soon."
Arklow Councillor Sylvester Bourke told Newstalk Breakfast the community is in shock.
"I'd say that everyone in the county is really numb with shock and disbelief at this," he said.
"Their hearts go out to her family and it's just really something that'll take a while to get our heads around.
"It's an awful nightmare, every parents worst nightmare".
'My heart goes out to them'
Cllr Bourke said he knows the family very well.
"I know the mum and dad, Valerie and Liam; they're both really hard-working people, they're pillars of the community [and] really well-known in agri circles and banking circles." he said.
"My heart and everybody's heart goes out to them; it's very hard to find the words to comfort the family at this time".
Cllr Bourke said Clodagh was "a great all-rounder", being involved with a number of clubs.
"It'll be a huge loss and her friends and comrades will be devastated by this.
"I'd like to ask the listeners to say a prayer for them, to give them strength to be able to cope with this".
In a statement to Newstalk Spain's Guardia Civil said the case is under investigation.
